My association with Mike Foreman spans the last 25 years, long before he got the call to begin his astronaut days. We were fellow naval officers and test pilots.

More recently, I had the pleasure of participating in a Friendswood Methodist Church Troop No. 442 Boy Scout “high-adventure” canoe trip with Mike in northern Minnesota with our sons. During extensive planning and careful execution, I took special note of some qualities Mike displayed.

He listened carefully. He absorbed data and opinions before making decisions. He contributed freely as a teammate, coach, and leader. He kept a positive attitude, even when he lugged all the refrigerated food over a long portage or paddled into the teeth of 25 knots of wind and large waves. He contributed greatly to the morale of the group and the fun we had. He quietly worked his tail off, carrying more than his share, again and again. He did nothing halfway.

There are significant common elements between a canoe trip and Mike’s current work as Friendswood city councilman and as future mayor. The personal traits I saw on a lake in Minnesota foreshadow the traits you’ll see as mayor. Please join me in electing Mike for mayor.
